Senior Alexis Gordon was upset in her speciality, the discus, but came back in the shot put to claim the iron ball throw by a mere one-half of an inch to highlight the Chalmette girls’ performance at the Northshore Invitational track and field meet at the Slidell-city school the second Friday in March.

Gordon missed the Chalmette inventional meet as the powerlifting team traveled to West Monroe. The
school’s powerlifting team traveled to West Monroe to compete in the state championship event on March
16. Like she did last year when she became a member of the track team, she competed in powerlifting
for the first time in her high school athletic career after transferring from Hammond High to Chalmette
in the fall of 2011.

Slidell won the girls’ division with 161 points and were followed by Northshore 119, Fontainbleau 94, Covington 48, Lakeshore 43, Chalmette in sixth with 34, First Baptist 20, Pearl River 20, Salmen 13 and Pope John Paul 2. Lakeshore captured the boys’ division with 109 points and were followed by Slidell 105, Fontainebleau 83, Covington 79, Northshore 72, Salmen 70, Chalmette in seventh with 29, Pope John Paul 6 and Pearl River 3.

The second meet of this track season for last year’s girls’ district double throwing champion will come at the highly competitive and prestigious Sugar Bowl High School Classic set for March 22/23 at Tad Gormley
Stadium. Balancing the two sports this spring, the senior thrower despite few throwing practices has impressed head coaches David Koontz and Tanesha Sanchez with her drastically improving marks in the discus.

In the only practice when the throwing coaches measured her marks, most of her flings approached 140
feet or better. At the Northshore meet, she foot-fouled on two throws that reached the 130 foot range. She tossed the plate a legal mark of 109-10, losing by just two inches to a girl thrower from Northshore.

In the shot put, Gordon heaved the 4kg iron ball, 35 feet, seven inches, winning by just one-half of an inch
to a Covington thrower. Leading the Lady Owls on the track was sophomore sprinter Chelsea Cazenave
who finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a 28.44 second time.

The Owls’ top runner, senior Albert Brock, did not run in the Northshore event, having to fulfill a Friday
night academic obligatin by giving a performance in a fine arts class. The Chalmette’s best performance
on the track came from senior sprinter Kerry Trosclair who finished as the 100-meter dash runnerup with a 11.17 hand-held time.

Improving drastically from his first career meet in the 800-meter run, Anthony Deal not only shaved
nearly eight seconds off his first meet time by placing third at Northshore with a 2:11.30 clocking as compared to his 2:19.07 time at Chalmette in the season- opener when he placed seventh.

The best field event performance came from senior Curtis Winding who reached a personal record 43-5 in the shot put for a fourth, while placing sixth with a discus toss of 111-4. Sophomore Zeke Keirsey also achieved a PR in the shot put with his fifth place mark of 41-5, improving by nearly four feet from his first ever heave with the 12-pound ball when he opened his high school track career with a 37-9.25 measurement on the last day of February.

In the boys’ pole vault Donald Ellis also improved from his first meet as he cleared the bar at nine feet for a third place. Senior jumper (PV and HJ) Jermal Green who was unable to attend the meet. After Gordon’s top performances in two throwing events, sophomore thrower Gabby King who competes in all three throwing events also improved from her first career meet. In the discus she improved to 65-11 (60-4 last week), then increased her javelin throw to 79-9 (63-4 last week) and finished up in the shot put with another
increase by measuring 27-5 (26-2.25 last week).

In the javelin sophomore Loryn Harris improved to 69-4 from last week’s 60-4. Lady Owl Carmen Aguirre finished fourth in the pole vault with a six feet jump.

LSU Track & Field standout distance runner and Arabi native Cullen Doody was recognized by the Southeastern Conference on April 5 as the men’s recipient of the 2011-12 Brad Davis SEC Community Service Leader of the Year award.

Doody was selected for the award by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the league’s 12 member institutions, and is set to receive a $10,000 postgraduate scholarship provided by the SEC.

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive described Doody and the women’s award recipient, Alabama runner Leigh Gilmore, as “outstanding representatives of their families, their institutions, the Southeastern Conference and intercollegiate athletics.”

“The Southeastern Conference is proud to honor the efforts of Cullen and Leigh to make their communities a better place to live,” Slive added.

Doody’s community service goes back to his days in Arabi, where he was born and raised— he caught the volunteering bug in high school.

“In high school I did a two week project trip in Virginia, I also worked on the Operation Merry Christmas, which I really enjoyed,” said Doody.

Doody attributes his successful academic and athletic career to adhering to a schedule, and finding time within that set schedule to give back to his community. Doody was twice named LSU’s Cross Country Runner of the Year during a standout career in 2009 and 2011, while also serving as team captain during his senior season in 2011. He is also a two-time recipient of the Wally Pontiff Jr. Academic Excellence Award at LSU, as well as a Chancellor’s Award winner from 2009-11. He is also a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll during his career while maintaining a 3.93 cumulative grade-point average in Biological Sciences.

“My hours with running, school and volunteering are kind of like a job, in that I have to stick to a schedule, but it’s a job that I enjoy doing,” Doody explained.

His dedication to service is evident through the initiatives he has taken a part of during his years at LSU. For three years, Doody has been a member of LSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and has played a primary role in the SEC’s “Together We Can” food drive, as well as Habitat for Humanity projects in Baton Rouge. He also volunteers with children at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital and Delmont Elementary School, helped LSU host children and families at “Thanksgiving with the Tigers” and volunteers with the “Geaux Givers” program as a campus leader in community service.

“We have government programs to take care of a lot of stuff, but the people running those organizations can only do so much, so they might not be as enthusiastic about their jobs,” Doody explained about the importance of volunteers, “But volunteers are there because they want to be there.”

Doody has been accepted to LSU’s medical school and plans to attend this fall. He plans to use his $10,000 scholarship toward tuition.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced today nearly $3.8 million to the St. Bernard Parish School Board as additional funding for complete restoration of several of Chalmette High School’s Katrina-damaged athletic facilities.

“CHS provides its students with an extensive athletic program.

Hurricane Katrina damaged many of the school’s athletic facilities, and joint recovery efforts remain underway to ensure these facilities are entirely repaired so the athletic program can fully operate,” said FEMA’s Louisiana Recovery Office Deputy Director of Programs Andre Cadogan. “Our most recent funding supports continued recovery efforts at both CHS’s baseball and football stadiums.”

New FEMA-funded work at CHS’s baseball field facility includes the replacement of the school’s concession/restroom building, dugout repairs, seating and fencing repairs. Recovery work funded at CHS’s football field facility includes both “home side” and “visitor side” repairs at the concession buildings and press boxes, as well as bleacher repairs.

“We appreciate the continued support of FEMA in funding the recovery work at the Chalmette High School athletic facilities,” said St. Bernard Parish Superintendent of Schools Doris Voitier. “FEMA has been a valued partner in our total recovery, and we look forward to a shared effort to complete all of our projects.”

Construction on the athletic field facilities began in April 2010 and is expected to be complete in 2012.

“High school sports tend to bring community members together. So in addition to the students, hopefully these restored athletic facilities will also be enjoyed by their families and friends too,” added Cadogan.

Including this grant, FEMA has provided approximately $438 million in total to the St. Bernard Parish School Board for Katrina and Rita related recovery work necessary to restore many of their storm-damaged facilities.

When FEMA approves projects through its supplemental Public Assistance grant, the funds are made available to the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, who disburses them to the applicant for eligible work completed.

The Public Assistance program works with state and local officials to fund recovery measures and the rebuilding of government and certain private nonprofit organizations’ buildings, as well as roads, bridges and water and sewer plants. In order for the process to be successful, federal, state and local partners coordinate to draw up project plans, fund these projects and oversee their completion.
