Chalmette Arc site celebratedDec 5th, 2011 | By William Dilella | Category: News
Residents of the Prince of Peace facility in St. Bernard Parish, as well as volunteers and representatives from the Arc of Greater New Orleans (GNO Arc), local officials and members of the St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce celebrated the official opening of the new facility with a ceremonial ribbon cutting.
Arc is an organization that supports and aids individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Chalmette location was opened in stages, beginning on September 19 of this year. GCO Arc’s partnerships with several organizations—including the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Metropolitan Human Services and a host of dedicated individuals volunteering their time—lead to the full facility opening on November 18.
“We’ve had a great deal of support from St. Bernard Parish,” said Kristi Andre, Program Coordinator at the Community Center. “We’re happy to be here, and never would have got here without the Parish’s help.”
The St. Bernard Arc facility includes a common area, for arts and crafts, a kitchen facility and a full vegetable garden, tended by the residents. Plans are in place to expand that for larger farming land. The residents also recently received new sports and fitness equipment, such as bicycles and volleyball sets, through a local grant.
The facility is always accepting donations to assist with operation. Anyone interested in making a donation should contact the center at 504.301.4360.
