Chalmette bank robber apprehended

A Chalmette man who called his wife and told her he was about to do something stupid robbed a bank near his residence, implying he had a gun, and was later arrested by sheriff’s deputies as he walked a highway carrying most of the stolen money.

Michael Sextion, 35, of 216 8th St., robbed the Capital One Bank on W. St. Bernard Highway in Chalmette, at about 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday. He gave a teller a note saying he needed money and no one would be hurt. No actual weapon was produced. He was booked with first-degree robbery and is being held without bond in St. Bernard Parish Prison.

It was the first bank robbery in St. Bernard Parish since prior to Hurricane Katrina.

SBSO reported that Sextion said he had recently lost his job and needed money for his family. He also said he had called his wife beforehand and told her he loved her.

Witnesses said the robber arrived at the bank on a bicycle, but when Sextion was spotted on West St. Bernard. Highway more than an hour later by Deputy Joe Moore, he had changed clothing and had ditched the bicycle and was walking. A bicycle possibly used by Sextion was recovered on a street not far from the bank.

Sextion admitted to robbing the bank after quetioning by sheriff’s detectives commanded by Chief of Detectives Col. John Doran.

Most of the stolen money was found in Sextion’s wallet. He denied he had spent or hid of any of the money that was un-accounted for.
