Chalmette High athletes were honored by being named to all-district teams in boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball as well as boys’ and girls’ soccer and Haley Smith added an all-metro basketball honor to her résumé, announced CHS Athletic Director David Brossette.
Junior guard Bryant Griffin was selected to the boys’ all-District 9-5A squad and will be the team leader for Coach Butch Stockton’s Owl basketball team next season.
As a 5-4 junior point guard, Haley Smith guided the Guy McInnis-coached Lady Owls to the district’s runner-up spot by averaging nearly 18 points a game and will be the Lady Owls’ top returning player for her final prep season.
For her ball-handling skills, driving lay-ups that create numerous free throw opportunities each game as well as her 3-point shooting accuracy plus pin-point passing and strong court vision and awareness, Smith was named to the all-metro girls basketball team and she gained an all-state honorable mention tag as well.
To start the school year, Haley was honored as an all-district volleyball selection as well as being named to the all-state first team volleyball squad.
Joining Haley Smith as an all-district player was 5-9 senior forward Torrie Smith who averaged more than 12 points a game. Torrie was picked as an all-metro volleyball player to start her senior school year.
Leading the Owls’ soccer team was senior Hector Fernandez as a mid-fielder on the District 9-I squad. He becomes a two-sport all-district selection, having been named to the district’s football mythical squad as a place kicker who set a school record with two field goals in one game.
Honored as all-District 9-I girls’ soccer players were senior mid-fielder Melanie Nicolay who also won the district’s cross country crown; senior mid-fielder Allaa Alkurd and sophomore defensive specialist Lauren Gonzales.
