Davies first-graders raise butterfliesJun 1st, 2012 | By admin | Category: School News
The first graders in Mrs. Gioia & Ms. Knight’s class at Joseph Davies Elementary have been learning about life cycles and animal habitats. Charlene Woodson, a parent helper, donated caterpillars and a butterfly cage for the students to observe the butterfly life cycle first hand. They were very excited watching the caterpillars chomp through the leaves and grow so quickly. The cocoons really amazed them. Then every day they came to school anticipating butterflies. They were elated when the first butterfly made its appearance. The students were able to see the butterfly slowly spread its wings to dry them. Eventually it was able to fly around the cage. The students named the first butterfly “Buttercup”. They watched as Buttercup flew away. It was truly a learning experience that they will never forget.
