A lawn full of stickers is no fun to bare feet! After summer stress, many lawns in the area are bare in patches, or thin from drought and heat. This allows weeds to colonize the gaps in soil coverage, which can include lawn spurweed (Soliva sessilis), also known locally as burweed, stickers, and “ouch!”. Pets and children who may walk on a lawn with spurweed can come away with painful pokes from the burs. Usually, when gardeners notice the weeds that produce these painful burs, it’s too late in the season to apply an herbicide to treat the problem and prevent the formation of the spike covered seeds.
