Joseph Jewell Roper Sr. in Covington, LA on April 21, 2014 at the age of 88. Joseph is survived by his children, Joseph Jr. (Shirley), Justin (Cheryl), Cherine Roper, Colleen Hutto, Jerard (Donna), Celeste Daigle and his sisters, Isabelle Espenan and Jeanne Garman, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Roper was preceded in death by his wife Norma Rose Held Roper and daughter, Christine Martinez. Son of the late Emilienne Froisy and Henry Roper. Brother of the late Sister Mary Juliana (Florabelle), Marie Bennett, George, Robert and Gilbert Roper. He was a native of New Orleans, LA and a resident of Mandeville, LA. Mr. Roper graduated from Holy Cross High School and served in the US Navy. He studied and trained to be an Optician and worked at American Optical and Nu Deal Optical in New Orleans and operated his own business, Precision Opticians, in St. Bernard Parish. He retired after serving customers for 45 years. Mr. Roper was a man of great faith and served the Lord as an Usher and Lecturer at St. Maurice and Prince of Peace Catholic Churches. He served as a Eucharistic Minister and participated in Eucharistic Adoration. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Roper was a kind and generous individual who always felt that there were many who were less fortunate and therefore contributed to various charities and associations throughout his lifetime. He was loved by everyone he came in contact with and will be sadly missed by all. We would like to thank St. Tammany Parish Hospice and the nurses and doctors at St. Tammany Hospital for taking such good care of Mr. Roper. Also, a special thank you to Mrs. Lee Denina who unselfishly took time to assist our Dad at Pontchartrain Health Care while caring for her husband. Relatives and friends were invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, on Thursday, April 24, 2014. Visitation was held earlier that day.
