School supplies give-away July 31
Jul 22nd, 2011 | By Terri Sercovich | Category: School NewsFor the fourth consecutive year, school supplies donated by individuals and a group will be given away to St. Bernard Parish children, this year at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, at Violet Park No. 2 on East St. Bernard Highway in Violet, near Willie Smith Elementary School.
Supplies for up to 1,000 children, including back packs, writing tablets, pencils and other items, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, said Russell Banks Sr. of Violet, organizer of the event, along with the group Boss Nation.
Children receiving the supplies must be present, not just an adult, in order to get them, Banks said.
The event is open to any school-age child who is a resident of St. Bernard Parish, Banks said.
Upwards of 600 children received supplies at last year’s give-away and about 300 the year before.
“This is getting bigger each year,’’ Banks said. “A lot of families struggle to have school supplies for their children so we like to do something to help the community.”
