Southern Forest moves to St. Bernard PortSep 5th, 2013 | By Candace Griffin | Category: News
Recently, the Port established new leases with Southern Forest Products. This venture will bring approximately 40 new jobs to the Parish and an estimated 600,000 tons of cargo to the port per year.
This new company, and the Port’s third largest tenant, specializes in exporting yellow pine from the region to countries as far away as Turkey, Indonesia, India, and China.
SFP will be leasing 14 acres of lay down space from the Port, as well as warehouse and office space.
“Not only will this new tenant add to our marine interests and industrial park,” said Robert Scafidel, Executive Director of the Port. “But it will have a positive effect on the community and economy as well.”
Gaining this new tenant was an important step for the Port and it will allow them to continue on with their ever expanding progress, Scafidel continued.
St. Bernard Port took in 10 million tons of cargo last year—a personal record—and hopes to boost that number with the help of Southern Forest Products.
“We’re glad to be creating more local jobs and business opportunities,” said Cy Hill, Vice President of Associated Terminals.
