Former St. Bernard Parish Clerk of Court, Lena Torres was named a Hall of Fame Honoree for her 24 years of service in the Clerk’s Office by the Louisiana Center for Women in Government and Business at its 20th Annual Hall of Fame Awards last week.
“It was my privilege to serve the citizens of St. Bernard Parish for over 70 years,” said Torres. “My public service would never have happened were it not for the support of my family, the people of St. Bernard, the staff of the Clerk’s office and my friends and colleagues across Louisiana. I am eternally grateful to all of you.”
Growing up in Docville and receiving her education from Soul√© College, Torres began her career in public service in 1940. When her husband, Sidney Torres Jr., was elected Clerk of Court in 1956 she ran the Clerk’s Office for him.
“She studied, practiced, and respected the the roles and responsibilities that this job included, and later turned it into a model for other Clerk’s Offices across the state, through her dedication and ingenuity,” said Sandy Rosenthal, Chair for the 2013 Hall of Fame.
Torres has always been an active member of the community, and professional, civic and philanthropic organizations‚Äîas well as dedicating a very successful 72 years to public service.
“For all of us who have dedicated our lives to public and community service we owe a special debt of gratitude to the Louisiana Center for Women in Government and Business,” said Torres. “It is organizations like this that remind us all of the importance of public service and citizen responsibility to our local community, our state, and our nation.”
This organization encourages and promotes the leadership of women by providing resources and non-partisan support through educational workshops, training seminars, and outreach programs. They also focus on promoting women in government, acknowledging achievements of women, and teaching citizens about the importance of public service.
