Violet Oyster Festival returns to St. Bernard ParishOct 26th, 2010 | By admin | Category: Community
But some of those anxieties were laid aside last weekend with the return of the Violet Oyster Festival to St. Bernard Parish. Notable crowds attended the festival on the grounds of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Violet for all three days. Besides freshly shucked oysters, the festival offered live music, carnival rides, raffles, food and even a baby contest.
St. Bernard Parish President Craig Taffaro, who showed off his shucking skills in the oyster tent last weekend, said that, even though the oyster industry is still reeling from the oil spill, the festival celebrating oysters couldn’t have come at a better time.
“Certainly when the decision was made to put the oyster festival back in play [last spring] no one anticipated an oil spill. When the oil spill hit, we were already full speed ahead,” Taffaro said. “This gave us another to stage to show how this community continues to be resilient and bounces back.”
Proceeds from the festival benefited Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
