Volunteers gather to beautify Torres Park

Weeding efforts at Torres Park took place recently in preparation for the delivery of new mulch purchased by parish government. The work was completed through the efforts of parish government workers, Sheriff’s office trusty workers, bobcats provided by parish government, fire department and Associated Terminals, and community volunteers.  Repairs to equipment damaged by over-aged children and vandals will continue.

Pre-Katrina very little vandalism occurred at the playground. A great need exists to engage families who visit the playground to pick up trash, remind others that no food or drinks are allowed, and to call the Sheriff’ office when they witness children or adults abusing the equipment. Access to the play area is through the main entrance, and not by jumping over the fence and damaging pickets. The playground was designed and built for children ages 2-12. It was also built in 2003 and again in 2008 by community members and with funds provided by the community.

In appreciation of the generosity of the St. Bernard parish community toward the restoration of Arc’s Chalmette Community Center, Arc of GNO’s Leadership team chose to spend a day volunteering at the Community Playground in Torres Park. Weeding the gardens at the playground’s entrance started early in the morning. Mid-morning efforts turned to removing all grass and weeds growing in the playground as prep for the arrival of new mulch. This project provided team building opportunity as well as opportunity to meet local families who enjoy regular visits to the child-designed, community-built playground.
