Where Ya’ Rack? Parish promotes bikingSep 9th, 2013 | By Candace Griffin | Category: News
New bike racks have recently been installed in Sidney D. Torres Memorial Park, thanks to members of the Young Leadership Council (YLC), who founded the “Where Ya’ Rack” project that aims to promote bicycling in cities.
“We heard about this programs success in New Orleans and wanted to bring it to St. Bernard,” said Dan Jatres who is part of the Young Leadership Council.
Where Ya’ Rack was started in 2009 and provides convenient, secure bicycle parking throughout the Greater New Orleans area—they are now expanding into St. Bernard and Gretna.
The two racks installed at the park were funded through sponsorships by the St. Bernard Community Foundation and the Law Offices of Sidney D. Torres, III. There are also plans to install another rack at the opposite end of the park, as well as one at the Aycock Barn in Arabi. These racks are all part of a push to improve bicycling in the Parish.
“We’re excited to expand our project to a new community,” said Garlan White, Where Ya’ Rack? co-project leader. “Parish officials and residents have been great partners in promoting our goal of providing secure racks for bike parking.”
The program has installed a total of 220 racks throughout the three parishes and plans to keep on building due to high demand from schools and libraries, said White.
